A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Hashim, has resigned his membership of the party, citing deepening internal divisions and failed reconciliation efforts.
In a resignation letter addressed to his ward chairman in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Hashim said his decision takes immediate effect, following what he described as prolonged instability within the party.
He noted that the PDP has been engulfed in “persistent and unending crises” for over a year, leading to its split into two major factions and weakening its internal cohesion.
Hashim revealed that he had made several attempts, alongside other stakeholders, to broker peace and reunite aggrieved members, but said those efforts ultimately failed to produce meaningful results.
He alleged that the lingering crisis may be partly orchestrated to undermine the party’s strength as an opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the situation risks leaving the PDP unable to field credible candidates or reducing it to a passive supporter of the ruling government.
“I cannot, in good conscience, be complicit in actions that undermine democratic values,” he stated, adding that remaining in the party would contradict his principles.
Hashim said he would now work with like-minded Nigerians to resist the drift toward a one-party state and contribute to building a new political movement focused on security, justice, and economic development.
