The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has urged the three tiers of government to encourage farming in a bid to ensure food security in the country.
This was revealed in a statement issued by the Directorate of Media and Publicity to Ooni’s palace, Comrade Moses Olafare. He disclosed that Ogunwusi made the remark when the monarch hosted farmers, traders and other economic stakeholders at the palace, Ile-Ife for the annual yam festival.
The monarch harped on the importance of food commodity to human survival.
“What is critical in encouraging food security is to encourage and celebrate farmers because they feed us. If we celebrate them(farmers), they will be encouraged to do more through which food security will be guaranteed.
“Nigeria is no doubt the largest producer of yam across the world, but we need to translate this into development and economic prosperity for our people. The Federal, State and Local governments must as a matter of core responsibility do everything possible to add value to the farming business.”
