The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it has seized more than two billion tramadol pills over the past 18 months through coordinated operations and intelligence sharing with international partners.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), disclosed this during a familiarisation visit to the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos.
Marwa said the seizures were made with support from authorities in India and Pakistan, warning drug traffickers against using Nigeria’s ports to move illicit substances.
He noted that the agency has strengthened surveillance and intelligence gathering while working closely with the Nigeria Customs Service, NAFDAC and other security agencies to improve information sharing and enforcement.
Marwa called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, port operators and stakeholders, stressing that the fight against drug trafficking requires collective action beyond the NDLEA.
He also highlighted the recent discovery of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Ogun State, saying the facility could have produced illicit drugs valued at about $360 million if it had remained operational.
The NDLEA chairman urged parents to monitor their children for signs of substance abuse and seek early intervention, adding that proposed amendments to the NDLEA Act would impose tougher penalties on drug traffickers.
Officials of the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Port pledged continued cooperation with the NDLEA, reaffirming their commitment to keeping the facilities free from illicit drugs and other criminal activities.
