Middle East crisis halts pilgrimages as Nigerians abroad raise alarm

Escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel have begun to ripple into Nigeria, disrupting pilgrimages, unsettling the aviation sector and triggering distress calls from Nigerians living in parts of the Gulf region.

The tension, linked to the long-running dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme and involving the United States, has led to missile exchanges and mounting casualties. Reports indicate that hundreds have died in Iran, including close associates of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, while fatalities have also been recorded in Israel and among U.S. troops.

Back home, some members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have staged protests in cities such as Kano, Kaduna and Lagos, expressing solidarity with Iran as the conflict deepens.

Amid the deteriorating security situation, the Federal Government suspended all Christian pilgrimages to Israel. The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission announced that both government-led and private pilgrimages would remain on hold until stability returns, stressing that the safety of Nigerian pilgrims remains paramount.

At the same time, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission confirmed it had received distress enquiries from Nigerians in countries including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Iran. Many callers sought information about possible evacuation plans should the crisis escalate further. Authorities said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring developments and coordinating with relevant agencies.

Airspace closures across parts of the Middle East — affecting countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Kuwait and Syria — have forced flight rerouting and cancellations, leaving some Nigerian travellers stranded. The disruption has also raised concerns within the aviation industry over lost revenue and increased operational costs as airlines adjust routes.

Industry stakeholders warn that prolonged instability could dent airport earnings and strain airline finances, noting that aviation is globally interconnected. For now, officials are urging calm, adherence to travel advisories and prayers for a swift return to peace in the troubled region.
