Gas leakage: NEMA, others prevent Ikeja disaster

Emergency workers yesterday forestalled a major disaster at Ikeja, Lagos, following a massive gas spillage from the pipeline.

The spillage, which affected Computer Village, Awolowo Way (Underbridge), Oba Akran axis, Anifowose Street and Medical Road, reportedly caused panic.

It was gathered that the drainage in the affected areas and some major roads were covered with gas with residents fleeing their homes for fear of an explosion.

A timely intervention by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Fire Service, the police and other relevant agencies ensured the situation remained under control.

NEMA’s acting Southwest Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, who issued the alert, urged residents to avoid igniting naked flames.

The agency chief advised shop owners to keep off the area for the time being.

He also notified the public that the area had been cordoned off and traffic in and out diverted, as precautionary measure.
