FG sues Meta over illegal adverts, demands N30b

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms Incorporated and its agent AT3 Resources Limited.

Meta is the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The country’s lead advertising governing agency said yesterday that the advertisements on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in the Nigerian markets were not vetted and approved by the Federal Government.

ARCON added that such continued unscrutinized adverts and other publications emanating from Zuckerberg’s Meta-owned social media platforms were illegal, unlawful, and a violation of the extant advertising law in Nigeria.

Therefore, it is demanding N30 billion for punitive damages.
