FG sets aside N500bn security fund amid attacks

The Federal Government has reportedly deducted about ₦500 billion from May 2026 federation revenues to establish a national security emergency fund aimed at tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnappings and other security threats.

Sources familiar with proceedings at the June meeting of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) said the deduction was made before revenue sharing among the Federal Government, states and local governments. An official FAAC document showed ₦250 billion was earmarked for a Military Intervention Fund, ₦252 billion for an Infrastructure Development Fund to states, and ₦450 billion transferred to the Non-Oil Excess Revenue Account.

Economists welcomed the move, describing security as essential for economic growth and investment, but stressed that the fund must be managed transparently to avoid concerns over misuse. They argued that additional funding could improve troop welfare, procure equipment and support the recruitment of more security personnel.

Meanwhile, the Department of State Services (DSS) urged lawmakers to remove provisions in a proposed Security Trust Fund Bill allowing grants and donations from international organisations, warning that foreign funding could compromise intelligence operations and expose sensitive information.

The DSS maintained that external donations may come with disclosure obligations capable of revealing intelligence methods, procurement processes and deployment strategies, while also creating opportunities for foreign influence over Nigeria’s security priorities.

The secret police instead recommended that only local organisations should be permitted to contribute to the proposed trust fund and called for clearer funding formulas and adjustments to the composition of the governing board.

In a related development, Deputy Inspectors-General of Police assigned to the six geopolitical zones have resumed duties in their respective regions as part of efforts to decentralise operational leadership and strengthen responses to growing security challenges nationwide.
