The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the Smart National Transport Databank (SNTDB), a digital platform designed to enable real-time collection and management of transport and mobility data across Nigeria.
The project, proposed by the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), is aimed at supporting evidence-based policymaking, infrastructure planning, safety management, security operations, and improved mobility coordination nationwide.
According to NITT, the system will be implemented through a Public–Private Partnership arrangement under the Design–Build–Finance–Operate–Transfer model, with Asia-Arab Investment Nigeria Limited as the private sector partner.
The databank is expected to serve as a central intelligence platform that integrates, processes, analyses, stores, and disseminates transport data across sectors.
It will also support real-time traffic monitoring, automated enforcement systems, and improved road safety and national security operations.
Key components of the project include the installation of 250 solar-powered smart gantries nationwide, the establishment of traffic management centres in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, a centralised national data centre, and the deployment of RFID-enabled smart e-tag technology for vehicles.
The initiative is also projected to create jobs, reduce revenue leakages, strengthen inter-agency coordination, and accelerate digital transformation within the transport sector.
