President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday charged the newly decorated acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to reposition the Nigeria Police Force and restore public confidence amid rising concerns over banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes across the country.
Tinubu, who personally decorated Disu at the State House in Abuja, described the appointment as coming at a defining moment for national security. He urged the new police chief to strengthen discipline within the Force, enhance inter-agency collaboration and prioritise the protection of lives and property.
Drawing from his experience as former Governor of Lagos State, the President expressed confidence in Disu’s professionalism and operational record, noting that he had demonstrated dedication and innovation in previous assignments.
In his response, Disu pledged zero tolerance for corruption and impunity, declaring that the era of misconduct within the Force was over.
He said officers would be reminded that citizens are the ultimate authority and that effective policing depends on public cooperation.
The acting IGP outlined key priorities for his tenure, including professionalism and modernisation, accountability and integrity, and stronger community partnerships. He promised to embrace intelligence-led policing, digital tools and improved training while strengthening internal oversight mechanisms to ensure discipline across all ranks.
Disu formally assumed duty at the Force Headquarters after the decoration ceremony, taking over from Kayode Egbetokun, who recently stepped down. He acknowledged existing challenges such as trust deficits, resource gaps and outdated systems, but expressed confidence that with reform and collaboration, the Nigeria Police Force could overcome them.
