A Kaduna State High Court has refused the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ordering that he remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
The court ruled that El-Rufai failed to provide sufficient evidence and exceptional circumstances to justify the grant of bail while standing trial on a nine-count charge of alleged abuse of office and related offences.
Although the former governor was absent when the ruling was delivered, the court directed the ICPC to grant him unrestricted access to his medical team or any medical facility of his choice within Nigeria for treatment while in custody.
Justice Diruis Khobo adjourned the case to July 7 and 8 for the continuation of hearing.
El-Rufai was first arraigned in March alongside TMDK Terminal Limited Managing Director, Amadu Sule, over allegations of abuse of office and fraud.
Following an amendment to the charges by the ICPC, Sule was removed from the case, leaving El-Rufai as the sole defendant facing a reduced nine-count charge.
