The Presidency has extended the deadline for Nigerians and other stakeholders to submit memoranda and position papers on the proposed National Policing Bill.
Submissions will now close at 5pm on Friday, August 21, giving interested individuals and organisations an additional eight days to contribute.
The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill announced the extension on Thursday through its chairman, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila.
The Presidency had earlier set August 13 as the deadline for submissions.
Gbajabiamila said the extension was intended to allow stakeholders to make more substantive and technically sound contributions to the proposed legislation.
The Bill is expected to provide the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for Nigeria’s proposed new policing architecture.
It will also address accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The Working Group urged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security professionals, state governments, academics, professional bodies and members of the public to use the extended window.
Submissions must be made through the official National Policing Bill portal before the new deadline.
According to the Presidency, key issues under consideration include sustainable funding, command structures, recruitment and training, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency cooperation and accountability.
The framework will also need safeguards against political interference and abuse of state police powers.
The Working Group said it would produce an implementation-ready Executive Bill at the end of its assignment for onward legislative processing.
The National Policing Bill portal was launched on August 3, when the Presidency opened the public consultation.
The completed Executive Bill package is expected to be presented to President Bola Tinubu for review on September 3, 2026.
