Infrastructure vandalism in Delta State disrupted telecommunications services after a robbery attack at an IHS-managed telecom node in the ASB region knocked 33 base stations offline across 2G, 3G and 4G networks on July 8, 2026.
The disruption worsened the following morning after a separate fibre-optic cable cut severed primary transmission lines. Because the affected node served as a critical fibre convergence point, the secondary incident triggered a cascading failure that increased the number of affected sites from 33 to 103.
The outage temporarily disrupted digital communications, banking and commercial activities in communities served by the affected infrastructure, leaving thousands of subscribers without reliable network connectivity.
The incidents are also increasing financial pressure on Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), with industry sources reporting that network providers are using about 20 per cent more spare parts than budgeted for the financial year due to repeated infrastructure damage.
Engineering teams have consequently been forced to divert materials meant for network expansion and new site deployments to emergency repairs. This diversion is slowing the rollout of new infrastructure and could undermine Nigeria’s broadband penetration targets while delaying expected revenue for telecom operators.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently reported an average of 1,744 weekly attacks on telecom infrastructure nationwide, including more than 1,100 fibre cuts. Operators are also facing lengthy negotiations with insurance companies over compensation for damaged equipment.
Stakeholders are therefore calling for stricter enforcement of the Federal Government’s designation of telecom assets as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII). They argue that stronger protection of telecom infrastructure is necessary to reduce vandalism, preserve network investments and improve quality of service.
