United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in tackling terrorism, describing his leadership as decisive and reaffirming America’s commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria.
In a July 6 letter to Tinubu, Trump praised the administration’s resolve to combat terrorism and violence, particularly attacks on Christian communities. He said the United States would continue working closely with Nigeria to make the country safer and more prosperous.
Trump noted that the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap had strengthened collaboration between both countries. He highlighted the deployment of US Special Operations Forces to train Nigerian troops, provide intelligence support and improve counter-terrorism operations.
The Presidency said security cooperation between Nigeria and the US has expanded significantly, including the establishment of a Joint Working Group to coordinate intelligence sharing, military training and joint operations. It also cited the May operation around Lake Chad that reportedly eliminated ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki and 167 other fighters.
The Federal Government said security agencies have intensified operations against terrorists and kidnappers, leading to the rescue of hundreds of abducted victims in states including Borno, Kaduna, Niger and Oyo.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaye, described Trump’s letter as recognition of Tinubu’s leadership and the military’s recent gains against insurgents.
International affairs expert Prof. Kayode Soremekun welcomed the US President’s endorsement but urged the government to sustain the offensive while addressing the root causes of terrorism, including socioeconomic challenges, and accelerating reforms such as the establishment of state police.
