Lagos vows sustained demolition of illegal roadside structures

The Lagos State Government says it will continue demolishing illegal structures and shanties along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway to restore environmental order.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the enforcement exercise has been ongoing for the past three weeks.

He explained that continuous surveillance and monitoring would follow to prevent people from reoccupying the cleared areas.

According to the commissioner, the exercise is part of efforts to stop the misuse of public spaces and improve environmental sanitation along the busy highway.

Residents and traders were urged to stop converting public spaces into markets or using them for unauthorised activities.

Wahab warned that anyone found encroaching on public spaces or violating environmental laws would be arrested and prosecuted.

The state government maintained that sustained enforcement, public compliance with environmental regulations and proper waste management are essential to building a cleaner, safer and more resilient Lagos.
