The Enugu State Police Command has impounded 195 vehicles for violating registration and number plate regulations as part of the nationwide enforcement of the ban on improperly registered vehicles.
The enforcement exercise, led by the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, targeted vehicles without registration as well as those with covered, defaced, obscured, improperly affixed, unauthorised or missing number plates.
According to the command, owners of the affected vehicles will be prosecuted in line with the National Road Traffic Regulations and other applicable laws. The impounded vehicles also include those operating with only one number plate instead of the legally required two.
Giwa commended officers involved in the operation for maintaining professionalism and reminded motorists of their responsibility to comply with vehicle registration and number plate regulations. He warned that the enforcement exercise would continue across the state to ensure full compliance.
The police commissioner also cautioned officers against extortion, harassment or any form of misconduct during the operation, warning that anyone found guilty would face disciplinary action.
He urged motorists still operating unregistered vehicles or using illegal number plates to regularise their documentation immediately to avoid arrest and prosecution.
The enforcement follows a recent directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, instructing police commands nationwide to strictly enforce the ban, citing the use of unregistered and improperly identified vehicles in criminal activities and the security risks they pose.
