Federal Government Approves Sweeping NYSC Reforms

The Federal Executive Council has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps, marking the first major overhaul of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.

The reforms include the full digitalisation of NYSC operations, improved security and welfare for corps members, upgraded orientation camps and better support for participants with special needs.

The Federal Government said the changes are aimed at transforming the NYSC from a mobilisation programme into a platform for skills development, entrepreneurship, job creation and stronger national integration.

A redesigned six-week orientation programme will be introduced, with corps members receiving training in civic responsibility, leadership, financial literacy, business planning and specialised career development.

The reforms also create 11 specialised corps streams covering sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, technology, law, public service, infrastructure, the creative economy, the green economy, enterprise and security.

The government said the traditional passing-out parade will be replaced with a formal graduation ceremony, while amendments to the NYSC Act will be pursued to provide legal backing for the reforms.

Officials said the overhaul is intended to strengthen Nigeria’s human capital by equipping graduates with market-relevant skills in support of the country’s long-term economic growth agenda.
