LAWMA Celebrates Female Workers with Health Screening, Awards on Women’s Day

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has celebrated female street sweepers and other women in its workforce with free medical screening and special recognition awards to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day.

Speaking at the event, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the initiative was organised to honour the dedication and resilience of female sanitation workers who contribute daily to maintaining environmental cleanliness across Lagos State.

He explained that the programme brought together street sweepers and other female staff members to recognise their efforts while also promoting preventive healthcare through free medical screening.

Gbadegesin commended the women for their commitment to keeping the state clean and livable, describing them as resilient workers whose contributions remain vital to LAWMA’s operations and the wellbeing of Lagos communities.

He also revealed that the Lagos State government had approved a health insurance scheme for the state’s 16,000 street sweepers. According to him, the workers will soon receive their health insurance cards, giving them free access to medical services under the Ilera Eko health policy.

The LAWMA boss urged the women to prioritise their health through regular medical check-ups and proper self-care while also encouraging them to invest in the education and empowerment of their children, especially the girl child.

Gbadegesin added that the success of the event was supported by partners, including Agatem Pharmaceuticals, which provided medications, Toleram Group, which donated food items, and Waste Care, which offered financial support for the sanitation workers.

As part of the celebration, five outstanding female street sweepers received awards and gifts in recognition of their dedication and exemplary service to the authority and the state.

Two sweepers, Mary Omoyosi and Taiwo Azeez, who spoke on behalf of their colleagues, thanked the Lagos State government and LAWMA management for their commitment to staff welfare and the prompt payment of salaries.
