The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned of a possible terrorist threat targeting US facilities and US-affiliated schools in the country.
In a security advisory issued on Monday, the embassy urged American citizens in Nigeria to exercise increased caution when visiting US diplomatic missions and institutions connected to the United States.
According to the notice, the alert applies to the US Embassy in Abuja, the US Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with the United States.
The embassy advised its citizens to remain vigilant, vary their travel routes and schedules, and avoid predictable patterns when moving around these locations.
It also urged Americans to stay alert in public places, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and ensure their mobile phones are fully charged in case of emergencies.
The advisory, however, did not specify the source or nature of the potential threat.
The warning comes amid heightened global security tensions following recent military confrontations involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which have triggered retaliatory missile and drone attacks across parts of the Middle East.
The development also coincides with protests in Lagos and some northern states by members of the Islamic Movement, who condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during recent strikes carried out by the United States and Israel.
