Tinubu, Governors Intensify Push Against Insecurity, Advance State Police

Nigeria’s fight against insecurity is entering a decisive phase as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors ramp up efforts to tackle terrorism, banditry, and related threats through a mix of international partnerships and local policing reforms.

At a high-level meeting in Lagos, the President and 25 governors signalled a coordinated strategy focused on securing foreign military support while advancing plans for the establishment of state police.

Tinubu disclosed that his administration is strengthening diplomatic ties to obtain modern military equipment, intelligence, and training. He cited recent discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and engagements with other global leaders as part of efforts to bolster Nigeria’s security capabilities.

“Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress and prosperity,” Tinubu said, stressing that addressing the challenge remains central to his administration’s agenda.

He also urged governors to complement federal efforts with grassroots interventions, particularly in supporting vulnerable populations and strengthening local security structures.

The President warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could worsen inflation and affect Nigeria’s economy, calling for proactive measures to mitigate potential shocks.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum confirmed that a legislative framework for state police is nearing completion and will soon be submitted to the National Assembly.

Speaking after the meeting, NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said governors were working closely with security agencies under the coordination of the National Security Adviser to finalise the proposal.

The move, he said, reflects a renewed commitment by state governments to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve coordination with federal authorities.

“As governors, we commit to renew our collaboration with security forces to defeat terrorism and improve the lives of our people,” AbdulRazaq stated.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for governors to commend Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investment.

With both federal and state actors aligning strategies, officials expressed optimism that the combined approach of enhanced security infrastructure and decentralised policing could deliver meaningful progress in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
