Senate seeks global partnerships to reform agricultural colleges

The Senate has intensified efforts to reform Nigeria’s agricultural colleges and research institutions as part of a broader push to strengthen the sector.

To achieve this, lawmakers are engaging key global partners to drive reforms, facilitate technology transfer, and attract fresh investments into agricultural education and research.

The initiative is being led by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, which has begun strategic discussions with countries including Malaysia, Brazil, China, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, said the National Assembly is determined to tap into international expertise to boost productivity, build capacity, and create jobs within the agricultural value chain.

These engagements are also in preparation for the maiden National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Research Institutions scheduled to hold in Ibadan.

According to the committee, the summit aims to mobilise global support, strengthen institutional frameworks, and showcase innovations that can accelerate Nigeria’s agricultural transformation.

Alli noted that partnerships with leading agricultural nations would help promote mechanisation, research collaboration, and the adoption of modern farming techniques across the country.

He added that agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda, with strong potential to drive job creation, reduce poverty, and support sustainable rural development.
