Pope calls for end to war in Easter message as Nigerian leaders express hope

Pope Leo XIV has called for an end to war and the oppression of vulnerable people, delivering a message of hope during his first Easter celebration as head of the Catholic Church.

The pontiff marked the resurrection of Jesus Christ against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in the Gulf region and the Russia-Ukraine war, urging the faithful to remain hopeful despite global unrest.

Speaking at St. Peter’s Square in Rome, the Pope condemned violence, injustice and the suffering of the weak, warning against indifference to human pain and inequality.

He stressed that even in moments of darkness, hope must endure, adding that renewal and change are always possible.

The conflicts in the Middle East also affected Easter celebrations in Israel, where authorities restricted large gatherings due to ongoing missile attacks, leading to scaled-down activities at key religious sites.

In Nigeria, political and religious leaders echoed similar messages of hope, unity and resilience amid economic and security challenges.

Vice President Kashim Shettima expressed optimism that the country would overcome its current difficulties, urging citizens to remain patient and united.

He said the nation’s challenges were temporary and would ultimately give way to long-term prosperity through collective effort and faith.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also assured Nigerians that insecurity would be brought under control, noting that the country would emerge stronger despite ongoing challenges.

Governors across various states shared messages centred on unity, sacrifice and perseverance, encouraging citizens to draw inspiration from the Easter season.

They emphasised the need for love, compassion and cooperation, while reaffirming their commitment to governance and improving the welfare of the people.

The leaders collectively urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, support ongoing reforms and work together toward national progress.
