Oyo 2027: Makinde Begins Transition Talks Ahead of Governorship Election

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that his administration has engaged credible individuals as part of a structured transition process ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

In his April 2026 newsletter, The Business of Governance (No. 136), Makinde said a decision would be communicated in due course, reflecting both the progress achieved and the future vision for the state.

Earlier, on March 21, 2026, Makinde tasked his advisory council, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Bolaji Ayorinde, with engaging all Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirants and recommending a candidate to continue the Omituntun 3.0 project.

Among those consulted were Adedeji Olajide, House of Representatives member for Ibadan South-West/North-East; Nureni Adeniran, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board; Bimbo Adekanmbi, former commissioner for finance, budget, and planning; Debo Akande, state Chairman of the Agribusiness Development Agency; and Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

Makinde emphasized that residents are watching closely as the state approaches a transition period. He stressed that democracy thrives on plurality, credible alternatives, and strong institutions, warning against complacency and the risks of a one-party state.

He reiterated that effective opposition and citizen engagement are crucial for accountability and the protection of democratic space. Makinde promised ongoing consultations with various sectors to ensure inclusive, lawful, and sustainable governance.
