The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N2 billion bail to Bello Bodejo, National President of Miyetti Allah Kauta Hore, who is standing trial over alleged $2.63 million money laundering offences.
Justice Inyang Ekwo admitted Bodejo to bail with two sureties in like sum, ruling that the offences against him are bailable and that the court had the discretion to grant his application.
The court ordered one surety to provide three years’ tax clearance and reside in Abuja, while the second must own landed property worth N2 billion within the Federal Capital Territory.
Justice Ekwo also directed Bodejo to surrender his international passport to the court registrar and barred him from travelling outside Nigeria without the court’s permission.
The judge adjourned the case until October 5, 6 and 7 for the commencement of trial after Bodejo pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Bodejo had been remanded in EFCC custody after his arraignment earlier this month. While his lawyer argued that the alleged offences were bailable under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, the prosecution opposed the bail application.
