Experts advocate investment in Mathematics education for blind learners

Education stakeholders have called for increased investment in teacher training, assistive technology and accessible learning materials to improve Mathematics education for visually impaired learners in Nigeria.

The appeal followed a three-day Train-the-Trainers Workshop on Inclusive Mathematics Education organised by the Resource Centre for the Blind (RCB), Yaba, for resource teachers across Lagos State.

The workshop focused on equipping teachers with practical skills in accessible teaching methods and the use of assistive devices.

RCB Executive Director, Temitayo Ayinla, said visually impaired learners continue to face challenges such as inadequate specialised materials, limited assistive technologies and insufficient teacher preparation, which hinder their academic performance and participation in science and mathematics-related fields.

She expressed hope that participants would train other teachers in their schools to expand inclusive practices.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to inclusive education, highlighting support for additional JAMB examination time for candidates with disabilities and the provision of learning materials for inclusive schools.

The RCB also urged stronger collaboration among government, development partners and civil society to strengthen inclusive education policies nationwide.
