Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence has begun a comprehensive review of its counter-terrorism strategy across all operational theatres following renewed attacks on military formations in parts of the country.
The Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa, announced the review after a strategy meeting with the service chiefs in Abuja. According to him, the exercise is aimed at strengthening ongoing operations and ensuring that security forces regain full control of affected areas.
Musa said the meeting brought together the heads of the armed forces, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke. He acknowledged that recent attacks in the North-East led to casualties among troops but insisted that terrorist groups had suffered heavier losses during military operations.
He assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces were intensifying operations nationwide and remained committed to restoring lasting peace. Musa added that several terrorist commanders and assets had already been neutralised during ongoing military offensives.
The minister also warned against the spread of misinformation on social media, saying false reports could undermine the morale of troops on the frontlines. He urged the media and the public to avoid sharing propaganda materials produced by terrorist groups.
Meanwhile, the Senate expressed concern over a recent attack on a Nigerian Army base in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of soldiers, including Lt. Col. Umar Farouk, who were killed during the assault.
In the House of Representatives, members called for coordinated security operations to dismantle criminal camps around the Ekiti–Kogi–Kwara border areas. They urged the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and surveillance to prevent further attacks.
