The Gombe State Police Command on Sunday dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the ECWA Church in Kashere, Akko Local Government Area, was attacked by gunmen.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the command described the report as “entirely false,” insisting that no such incident occurred.
Our correspondent reports that a viral message was seen on social media that a local assembly was invaded, where parishioners were kidnapped.
“For the sake of setting the record straight, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pindiga and the Officer in Charge of the Kashere Police Outstation immediately reached out to one of the church elders,” Abdullahi said.
Continuing, Abdullahi added, “The elder, who was physically present in the church during the second segment of the Hausa service, confirmed that no such incident occurred.”
According to him, the church elder also acknowledged that police operatives had been stationed at the church premises throughout the day as part of routine security deployment.
“He confirmed that police officers were at the church premises providing protection,” the PPRO stated.
The command described the circulation of the false report as “irresponsible” and warned that it was capable of creating panic among residents. Abdullahi added that the originators of the misinformation would be investigated and appropriate action taken.
“The source of this misinformation will be thoroughly investigated. Members of the public are advised to remain calm and law-abiding, as the Gombe State Police Command remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents,” Abdullahi added.
The police urged residents to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports, especially those capable of causing fear or tension in the state.
